Cognitive Neurology
NeuroImaging & Brain Stimulation

The Berlin NeuroImaging Center (BNIC) focuses of clinical and experimental neuroimaging research. The Center is a joint initiative by the Charité University Medicine Berlin, the Humboldt and the Free University, the Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), and the Max Planck Institut für Bildungsforschung (MPIB).
The main funding sources were the German Ministry of Research (BMBF), the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE).The center is able to provide neuroimaging infrastructure (1,5 to 7 T MRI, MEG, EEG and optical imaging) to a large number of research groups.
The center was successful in building up structures, which made Berlin an attractive environment for other institutions with a strong neuroimaging background

– Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience

– Excellence-cluster: Language of Emotion

– Advanced Imaging Center Charité

In particular the following research groups represent the field at the department of Neurology

Vision & Motor Group
Stephan Brandt

Cognition, Aging and Neurorehabilitation
Agnes Flöel

Motor and Cognition
Fabian Klostermann

Cognitive Neurophysiology
Andreas Lüschow

Spatial Cognition
Christoph J. Ploner

Synchrony an Oscillations
EEG-fMRI Group
Petra Ritter

The centers scientific alumni have developed very bucketful careers:

– Prof. Arno Villringer was head of the BNIC. Since 2007 he is chair of the Max-Planck-Institute für Kognitions- und Neurowissenschaften in Leipzig

– Prof. Hauke Heekeren was a Post-Doc at the BNIC and is now the deputy cooridator of the Excellence-Cluster Languages of Emotion.

– Prof. Felix Blankenburg was a Post-Doc at the BNIC and now runs his own research group ‘Neurocomputing und Neuroimaging’ at the Bernstein Center for Computational Neurosciences.

– Prof. Wartenburger was a Post-Doc at the BNIC and is now holding the position of junior professorship at the University of Potsdam.
